Yesterday was Blog Quake Day! But your posts made today will be just as useful.
The past few weeks have been eventful for the Indian blogosphere, and demonstrated our collective power. We worked together to ensure that the plight of Rashmi Bansal and Gaurav Sabnis got the attention they deserved. We were instrumental in shining light on the dark and murky foundations that IIPM appears to stand on. Both the international and the national mainstream media took note of the exceptional way in which the Indian blogosphere responded.
It is time now to unite the blogosphere again – this time to help the many thousands whose lives have been devastated by the earthquake on 08 October.
Taking inspiration from Instapundit and TTLB, and the massive donations they were able to collect for Katrina relief efforts, we are calling for a BLOG QUAKE DAY on Wednesday, Oct 26, 2005.
We request each of you to make a small post about the earthquake, and direct your readers to a suitable avenue for donating to the relief efforts.
Every single dollar contributed, multiplied by the vast numbers of bloggers, will go a long way in helping these people rebuild their lives. Our experience of the last few weeks showed us that, no matter how small our blogs, and no matter how few our readers, the words we write and the way we use our blogs can have far-reaching consequences. We learnt not to underestimate our powers. Let’s now use our powers for good.
Some organizations that are extensively involved in relief and rehabilitation efforts, and could use your monetary contributions, are listed below :
CARE
Oxfam
UNICEF
World Vision
Humanity First
Hidaya Foundation
SEWA International
International Rescue Committee
Pakistan President’s Relief Fund
The Human Development Foundation
The Association for the Development of Pakistan ’s Earthquake Redevelopment Fund
For more information about the earthquake, and the subsequent ongoing relief efforts, you can visit the following sites, that are doing an excellent job of aggregating related information.
South Asia Quake Help
South Asian Earthquake Relief
Pakistan Wiki on Earthquake 10-05
For those in the tristate area, YOUR DIL has established an Emergency Response Team that has established collection points throughout the NY Metro area for aid to be dropped off, so that it may be shipped to Pakistan. They’re collecting tents, sleeping bags, blankets and specific over-the-counter medicines. Their collection points for Oct 27 and 28 are listed here. They could also use some volunteers for Oct 27,28,29 – and if you’re interested you can email them. Check site for details about future collection drives.
If you write about this, please don’t forget to let us know through the comments section or by e-mail. Technorati tag: blog quake day.
(The Blog Relief Day image is courtesy of Sepoy @ Chapati Mystery. Please feel free to use the same in your posts. )
Update#1: Aditya from Indicast talks with Ash on the concept of Blog Quake Day and of course, other light stuff regards India [podcast format].
Update#2: Instapundit carries the Blog Quake Day message forward.
Update#3: Chapati Mystery has special T-shirts for you Quake Help bloggers.
Update #4: Jagan Mohan cautions us about donating money to organisations that serve as terrorist fronts, and argues that this issue has national implications.
While we also ask you to be careful in choosing a suitable organisation, we disagree with his jingoistic POV.
As Pankaj says, the children, women and the old are not part of the terrorist machinery, and they will suffer the most if relief items do not reach them before winter sets in. We hope that political misgivings will not obscure urgent humanitarian needs.
Update #5: Neha carries the appeal forward at Global Voices Online.
Update #6: Alex Nesbitt asks podcasters to join in and help.
Update #7: Instapundit reminds everyone about the round-the-world blogburst for Pakistan earthquake relief.
Update #8: Anna at Sepia Mutiny, who started it all, counts on the strength of the blogosphere – “there is so much good here, let’s send some back where we all came from.”
Update #9: Asiapundit calls for its readers to give generously.
Update #10: Global Voices Online is calling to all bloggers worldwide to exericse their power.
Update #11: Asians in Media reports on the Blog Quake Day eforts.
Update#12: Sujatha makes a public service announcement on PodBazaar. Thanks, Sujatha.
Update #13: Tom Steinberg explains the concept of Pledgebank and hopes we can use it for earthquake relief efforts.[See Comments Section] An interesting project – anyone care to make pledges ?

TCF, SUNGI and IR (Islamic Relief) – are some of the organizations you might wanna consider donating to because they’re direct orgs on the ground, IR is the lead agency for all active relief agencies operating in affected areas while Sungi are lead for Oxfam and CRS with TCF already pulling towards the middle of their phase 1 plan with phase 2 needing much support.
We’ve blogged about the above organizations on the QuakeHelp Blog (quakehelp.blogspot.com), feel free to take a look.
Thanks & Keep it Blogged!

Hi, I’ve posted the message in my space.
I think you may have to check a few links you have listed.
1. Oxfam: http://www.oxfam.org/eng/donate.htm
2. The one where you have mentioned as collection points for 27, 28 and 29 for YOURDIL: There has been some update there in their site. Please check. (You may mention of their scheduled fundraising event instead)
3. Your link of volunteers required for YOURIL doesn’t work. You may use this instead: http://www.yourdil.org/join/
krish
Oct 24th, 2005 at 1:49 pm | #
Further, you may not mention the specific dates for volunteers – due to changes in the schedules of YOURDIL. Please check their site.

****PLEASE SUPPORT THE RELIEF TENT DRIVE!!****
A group of committed across the U.S., U.K. and Pakistan have created this blog (http://tentdrive.blogspot.com/) to generate funds to “shelter as many people as possible, as soon as possible”. We are committed to helper remote/rurual areas that have yet to receieve any aid.
We have raised over $6000 in just one week, and have delivered tents to a remote area – but need to raise much more to continue to provide shelter to the victims! Please help by donating and passing on the good word.

This is not the time to debate on whether the terrorists will benefit from opening the Indo-Pak border. We should not let people die because we are suspicious of the aid ending up helping the terrorists. We have but a few weeks to make sure help reaches the area.
Lets do our best…

many people seem to be worried of the fact that donations might fall into the wrong hands. But this thing happen everywhere, all the time and it doesn’t mean that one should stop giving donations just because it might fall into wrong hands. the best way to donate, and since most donors seem tobe working, would be to ask your HR to help. the Hr will do the needfull. usually most companies ahve Tie -ups with the right kind of Charirty organisations.

Despite its name figuring in Pakistan government’s ‘watchlist’, several international organisations like WHO and UNICEF have closely worked with Jamat-ud-Dawa, an outfit linked with banned terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), in providing relief to quake victims in PoK.
Various international relief organisations, including Red Cross, World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, World Food Programme, UN Organisation for Refugees, Sikh welfare organisation Khalsa Aid and Singapore-based MCTH Association had been working with Dawa in quake-hit areas of PoK, Pakistani daily Nawai Waqt reported on Wednesday.

Save lives by urging media to provide coverage for earthquake in South Asia
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/448983019
This petition is to urge the major media outlets around the world to provide coverage for earthquake in South Asia. With 3 million homeless and more than 75,000 injured in hard to reach area, this is the biggest relief operation the modern world has ever seen but has been completely ignored in the media. With harsh winter approaching, time is running out for the survivors. Media must play its role by providing extensive coverage of this tragedy.

Hi All,
I’ve just submitted the following to Desipundit as an idea, but I see no reason why I shouldn’t expose it directly to all of you to think about:
—-
I’m the director of a UK based charitable project called mySociety.org. In the UK our community of civic hackers (of which mySociety is one part) run most of the well known non-partisan online civic and political tools and services, like ww.WriteToThem.com , http://www.TheyWorkForYou.com and so on.
I am writing because mySociety’s most recent project is specifically designed to get strong action from people who might otherwise only be prepared to make relatively week committments. The site is http://www.PledgeBank.com, and we’ve had a great first 3-4 months with pledges like these:
http://www.pledgebank.com/refuse
http://www.pledgebank.com/rights
http://www.pledgebank.com/giveblood
I am writing to urge you to consider making a pledge around help for quake victims which can spread amongst the blogging community. I’m
sure your community can come up with better ideas than me, but here are a couple of suggestions:
1 – “I will give $1 to the quake appeal for every different person who leaves a comment on my blog telling me how many people they have urged to donate funding, but only if 50 other bloggers will”.
2 – “I will arrange to actually visit one of elected representative, demanding that they send more aid to the quake victims, but only if
local 5 people will pledge to come with me”.
For an extra incentive, there is $1000 up for grabs for the best pledge idea, from a US philathropist who likes our project. It expires
on tuesday, though!

Interesting idea Ted! Something like: “I will give 10$ to the pakistan earthquake every month for a year only if another 100 people do it?”

I would like to volunteer our services. We have a disaster relief section on our page. Feel free to post suggestions for our online community.
