I’ve just submitted the following to Desipundit as an idea, but I see no reason why I shouldn’t expose it directly to all of you to think about:

I’m the director of a UK based charitable project called mySociety.org. In the UK our community of civic hackers (of which mySociety is one part) run most of the well known non-partisan online civic and political tools and services, like ww.WriteToThem.com , http://www.TheyWorkForYou.com and so on.

I am writing because mySociety’s most recent project is specifically designed to get strong action from people who might otherwise only be prepared to make relatively week committments. The site is http://www.PledgeBank.com, and we’ve had a great first 3-4 months with pledges like these:

I am writing to urge you to consider making a pledge around help for quake victims which can spread amongst the blogging community. I’m
sure your community can come up with better ideas than me, but here are a couple of suggestions:

1 – “I will give $1 to the quake appeal for every different person who leaves a comment on my blog telling me how many people they have urged to donate funding, but only if 50 other bloggers will”.

2 – “I will arrange to actually visit one of elected representative, demanding that they send more aid to the quake victims, but only if
local 5 people will pledge to come with me”.

For an extra incentive, there is $1000 up for grabs for the best pledge idea, from a US philathropist who likes our project. It expires
on tuesday, though!

Save lives by urging media to provide coverage for earthquake in South Asia

This petition is to urge the major media outlets around the world to provide coverage for earthquake in South Asia. With 3 million homeless and more than 75,000 injured in hard to reach area, this is the biggest relief operation the modern world has ever seen but has been completely ignored in the media. With harsh winter approaching, time is running out for the survivors. Media must play its role by providing extensive coverage of this tragedy.

Despite its name figuring in Pakistan government’s ‘watchlist’, several international organisations like WHO and UNICEF have closely worked with Jamat-ud-Dawa, an outfit linked with banned terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), in providing relief to quake victims in PoK.

Various international relief organisations, including Red Cross, World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, World Food Programme, UN Organisation for Refugees, Sikh welfare organisation Khalsa Aid and Singapore-based MCTH Association had been working with Dawa in quake-hit areas of PoK, Pakistani daily Nawai Waqt reported on Wednesday.

many people seem to be worried of the fact that donations might fall into the wrong hands. But this thing happen everywhere, all the time and it doesn't mean that one should stop giving donations just because it might fall into wrong hands. the best way to donate, and since most donors seem tobe working, would be to ask your HR to help. the Hr will do the needfull. usually most companies ahve Tie -ups with the right kind of Charirty organisations. read my post here
