Reforms - do we need them?

Liberalization is a good thing, no? Shivam, the other Indian pauses and asks, but why are we reforming?

Update: Ravikiran leads the charge against Shivam’s seemingly inappropriate question regards reforms [hat tip: Madman]

I had taken the effort of posting a comment on that blogpost but it was ruthlessly edited out despite not having a trace of abuse and solely because I did not support Mr. Shivam.

If you would take the effort of perusing his posts on the blog or elsewhere, it is very evidently noticeable that he does not have an iota of either originality of analytical skills. We have seen originality of content and thought from his co-bloggers like Uma, Dilip and Vikrum in a varied range of topics. Their originality comes out also of honesty and humility, which is lacking in Mr. Shivam because he seems overly concerned with showing the world how he is part of a gorup that is victimised by hegemony. Pitying one’s own self is fine once in a while but the regularity with which he keeps doing it shows a certain hollowness.

The other stunt that Mr. Shivam often indulges in is shamelessly copy-pasting stuff written by other thinkers such as PBM(incidentally my teacher) almost acting as a feed aggregator. To make matters worse his interpretations of the writing- the miniscule amount that he putrs forth -are so amateurish and off the point that even the writers themselves would disapprove.

Another trick Mr. Shivam seems to enjoy is creating demons and then bad mouthing them since maybe it makes him feel good about himself. Run down Times of India, run down some two-bit libertarians, run down the media, run down anyone who doesn’t fall in line completely with what Mr. Shivam preaches. He makes his own bogeymen and then gets scared of them and cries to the world.

If Mr. Shivam actually steps out into the real world with genuine intentions of seeking knowledge rather than just fashionable bhaashan making, maybe he will develop the honesty and humility of U, D or V. If you would care to indulge me I have a hypothesis for his affliction. He is from Delhi. In Delhi success is measured not by your own estimation of yourselves but by others’. It is not enough to feel you are doing well, but it is necessary to get approval of the people around you. A show-offy culture. Bombay is more about substance, independence and self-belief. Since Mr. Shivam is from Delhi he seems to be wasting his time showing off to the world his caring and understanding.

Like Anirudh said on his post, this post is all about Mr.Shivam. The poor and the reforms and the economy are all side-shows.

I am left-of-centre by ideology, currently at JNU, and it makes me froth at my mouth when I see people like Mr. Shivam trivialising some real issues by making those issue revolve around their victimhood. There are millions more desrving of public sympathy than Mr.Shivam and if he interacts more with Dilip, he will learn where in the real world he can find them.

That blog post was just plain trash - a mish-mash of jumbled thoughts with no analytical basis. Please think seriously about the quality of posts you link to. I expect you guys to better than this.

Guys, Patrix, are you COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTENT ? So many good blogs out there yet you are posting Shivam Vij’s nonsense. It is probably the most childish argument against liberalization I have read on any internet forum. Please think twice before posting anything by this Shivam dude. He is confusing economics with leftist propoganda.

Dear Desipundit gang, please don’t link to articles after only reading the first two lines.

I tried reading this article. It made absolutely no sense to me. There was something about nobody questioning the need for reforms and yet nothing about what questions HE wanted to ask.

All he did was copy paste from various sources, and the text in between went all over the map. It looked as if he was drunk while writing it because I just couldn’t understand the point he was trying to make.

If Shivam wants to question the need or the outcome of reforms, let him actually ask them. Here’s what I want to know from him: what about the reforms does he object to? If he has a problem with the reforms, does he want them rolled back? He says nobody in the media questions the reforms. OK fine, but you have a blog and you’re posting that nobody is questioning it. And you yourself are not asking any questions.

Lastly, he should stop pointing to poverty and making it appear as if reforms CAUSED them. They did not. There were poor people earlier too, but there were a lot more of them. If the government reformed MORE, there would be even fewer poor people.

Emkay, slight correction. Shivam is actually from Lucknow, not Delhi. Now you may continue your pop psychology discourse of how people from Lucknow need to be validated by others :).

guys, guys…calm down. Don’t think that just because I linked to Shivam’s post means that I endorse his opinions. The post in question has sparked off good comments here and more importantly on the Other India blog. Nothing better than giving a contrarian opinion enough publicity that it can be countered. Madman, yup…I read Indian Economy Blog and have linked posts in the past. I would love to link a post that points out holes in Shivam’s post.

Firstly, the title of this Desipundit post- “Reforms - do we need them?” That’s not what my post is asking. It’s asking WHY we need them, explaining why I think motives are important.

Secondly: emkay, Rohit Vohra, Saravanan, Srivaths: I would like to read your blogs, and perhaps even comment. Where are they?

Thalassa: Wha??!

Shivam: Right, point taken. Perhaps Sourav Ganguly should demand to see my batting before I comment on his.
