1,684 Bloggers had blogged about the movie Rang De Basanti within 24 hours of it’s release. There are 4 bloggers who have blogged about Meher Bhargav so far. Where are the rest of the 1,680 bloggers who had been so passionate and aggressive about doing something for their country after watching Rang De Basanti? Where are they?
Oz is shocked that such blatant examples of lawlessness still exists and worse, goes unreported for days. Let us not suffer from outrage fatigue; join in the protest for Meher Bhargav.
If you are a Lucknow blogger, we would appreciate if you can dig up some facts peppered with latest ground realities and blog about it. We would be happy to feature you here [thanks to Sunny for the tip].
I’ll list your posts as updates if you choose to write on this subject. The post will be sticky for a day if it evokes significant response We have 13 (and counting) posts. More blog reactions after the jump:
Updates:
Parsi Khabar joins in.
And if you think I am just preaching.
Saakshi who was recently Boing-ed for her Akbarallys post hopes that justice won’t be denied.
Abhishek cites The Matrix philosophy to explain the seemingly hopeless situation.
Kaveeta seems to have been the first blogger to write about this issue. Unfortunately, we missed it until now.
Aditya finally sees what could drive the Rang De Basanti protagonists to kill a defense minister.
Anthony takes it to the extreme end and wants to lynch the guilty.
The Comic Project thinks that deep-rooted politicking might be at play here.
Swapna K wants to know the ‘official’ stats for eve-teasing.
MumbaiGirl is collecting mainstream media links.
Manish is disappointed that the otherwise safe city of Lucknow is deteriorating.
Megha has another related tale about blatant discrimination meted out to women; something that would never be tolerated elsewhere.
Mridula wonders if we are ready to take to the streets over injustice issues like the French students did last month. Are we truly the Rang De Basanti generation that everyone so badly wants to be?
Deepali writes about our misplaced priorities by being more incensed about hurt religious sentiments than basic human rights.
MayaBhushan thinks its the fight of the priviledged class. Well, if true, they are fighting because they can. Let us not question where we come from but rather where we are going.

Hmm good point. havent been following this news or rather any news. But considering people (read as I) picked up news on “Man divorces wife in sleep”, more could have been done.
One thing to keep in mind here that if everyone blogs on the same issue around the same time, it is no different than a newspaper or a newschannel which airs the news and then forgets about it after a few days. The good thing about blogging is people pick up issues as and when they want, and although some issues might be missed, some are kept alive because of the sheer diversity of views and the timing of putting them up.
1684 to 4 is a bad ratio but fantasy (movie) has a little more impact than reality because you “experience it”
Good point made though!!

I agree with what you said. I didn’t know about Meher Bhargav until I read your post. Each one of these incidents make me feel so helpless and wonder what’s going to happen to our country unless something is done to stop it. I read somewhere that a thousand voices raised in protest will defintely make a change. I hope that somehow that will happen.

Patrix – My suggestion is you keep it sticky for a bit until the Indian media and international media has caught up.
I’m going to try and write about this tomorrow hopefully for the Guardian blog in the hope that the main UK paper picks it up too.

Sunny, I can probably keep it sticky for another day (so we get the attention before the weekend is upon us). I didn’t know you were on the Guardian Blog. Send me the link when your story is up there.

Patrix – stay with the story, that’s my suggestion. I’ve had a few more thoughts. This story needs to be bigger to get a national Indian conversation going on eve teasing. This isn’t just about this murder, this is about the disregard for women’s lives too.
In order to get more coverage, the story needs to run and run. For that to happen, we need more facts, more stories, and more ‘events’, for journalists to keep covering it.
Are there any bloggers in Lucknow who can do a bit of digging on the story? More on the guys who did this, more on the police and find out why they didn’t collect more information. Maybe organising a press conference for the girl who was harassed.
This is a kind of a story the Indian media will go for, but they need more ammunition. If they’re too lazy to unearth more facts, local bloggers may be willing to do so, and then we can spread them through the web.

Sounds like a plan. I’ll ask around if there are any Lucknow bloggers and also post a notice to that effect on this post.

Well well well.
The Indian media has finally caught up and seems to be all over it now.
http://news.google.com/news?q=Meher+Bhargava
That is certainly good and it means some sort of outrage will be generated.
But we need to try and move the debate on to that about ‘eve-teasing’, which is surely the bigger problem in all this.

Sunny, the media seems to have picked it up and in fact, this incident puts the Blank Noise blog-o-thon into perspective. The issue is much grave than it seems and I hope it convinces the doubters.
