Where are the fundamentalists?

The New York Times ran a somewhat unusual story about Water earlier this week, “Film Ignites The Wrath of Hindu Fundamentalists. Though the title suggests the controversy is occurring in the present, the actual article refers again to the sacking of Mehta’s set in Benares in 2000. There is no current controversy over the film in India, because the film hasn’t been released there.

Amardeep at Sepia Mutiny is flummoxed over blatant cultural ignorance while reviewing movies. Sandeep, on the other hand, takes an extreme viewpoint and blasts the NYT for trying whip up religious sentiments [hat tip: JK]. Probably it is best to take a distanced view and be honest about the current state of affairs, even for us Indians.

At the rate at which the NYT seems to be coming up with BS(not just over India, btw), I just overlooked it as yet another goof-up by them.
