The question is this — what would the Indian government do if the UN were to circumscribe some rights that the Indian consititution guarantees its citizens? It is not obliged to take the UN’s definition, of course, but it is likely that India will be forced on the defensive. The lesson from Nehru’s ill-advised involvement of the UN in the face of Pakistani aggression is that it is best to keep the UN out of affairs that India can sort out on its own.
Nitin at The Acorn suggests that India should stay out of the UN Human Rights Council that is at best, a farcical attempt to protect the inalienable rights of people around the planet [hat tip: Confused].
