What our poor children need are good schools, with real classrooms, real blackboards, real infrastructure (including toilets) and real teachers. In the absence of these real things on the ground, spending money on fancy gadgets is a cruel scam.
Abi at Nanopolitan commends the Ministry of Human Resource Development on taking a wise decision regarding $100 laptops.
Update: Rajat is not entirely sure that the government is making a wise decision in dismissing the OLPC project.
OLPC can help in bridging the so called digital divide. But if the govt. seriouly feel that OLPC is not the correct way then it should come with a more proactive approach. Cellphone seems to be the digital platform of choice in India. Can’t we use them innovatively to tame this monster of illiteracy ?

Shunning something purely on the grounds of we don’t need this luxury is akin to saying: we were good with horsemen carrying our messages. We don’t need telephones. Instead of repeating, I’ll just link to my counter-argument [in comments] on why 100 laptop is really a dream worth grabbing.
