Vulturo triggers an extended debate on racism (Desi style)

First, Rahul:

Caste, if one dresses “neutrally”, is not externally visible, so skin colour serves as a proxy. If we remove the idea that dark is ugly, we will have made some progress. I think the media should take the lead (and, in fact, bears huge responsibility for the state of affairs). We rarely see dark-skinned people in the media or advertising. Really, how many truly dark (not “wheatish”) celebrities can you think of in India? After racking my brains for a bit, the only male I could think of is Vijay Amritraj, and I can’t think of any darker-skinned woman than Nandita Das (who is not darker than average, at best, in India).

Next up, we have fellow ‘Pundit Confused:

Before I address [the question: Is Saket racist?], let me state at the outset-he is being stupid. As Patrix points out, each of us are responsible for the consequences of what we say-Saket’s comment would be construed as offensive at the least and racist at worst. If he was in the US, and if he opined that he found Black women less attractive-he would be in trouble. So we should definitely be wary of making such broad generalizations which frankly serve no real purpose.

And finally, here’s Founder ‘Pundit Patrix who, after commenting on Saket’s post, says this:

Quite a few people have emailed me asking me to take a second look at Saket’s role in DesiPundit. For the umpteenth time, DesiPundit is a filter-blog comprised of loosely-connected bloggers who have personal opinions and are even encouraged to voice them while linking to posts. I am sure the contributors understand that they are responsible for their words and that it helps the readers to understand them better, positively or negatively. DesiPundit does not condone sexist or racial remarks but we also understand that Saket is completely and entirely entitled to any opinions on his personal blog. We have always been an individualistic, diverse, and opinionated bunch of bloggers and I hope we stay that way (downside is, we get criticized by everyone). So I find the question to examine his role in DesiPundit redundant.

Of course Saket has a right to say whatever he wants on his blog. But then again, as the founder of a filter-blog, you might want to consider the maturity (or, in this case, the lack thereof) of your contributors.

SG, I know and I did. And probably things would be treated differently if DesiPundit was a formal hierarchical organization but it is a collection of loosely-connected bloggers who speak their mind (or at least are expected to) when they link posts.

I find the whole issue amusing like the kettle calling the pot black!

Ladies and gentlemen before calling — our own — as ‘racists’, let’s remind ourselves, a few shades darker (or fairer) we all belong to the same Indic/South Asian races. We might call ourselves Punjus, Guujus, Mallus, Madrasis or whatever. That’s how the rest of the world sees us.

Why is such a ruckus being raised over Vulturo’s personal preferences? Isn’t he entitled to his own choices of what he finds Hot (and not). Who are you to dictate Saket (as a peron) what kind of girl he should like to date or not?

I’ve never seen a white who prefers Blondes or red-heads being labelled racist (just for that). Then why raise such a hell over Vulturo’s personal preferences as a layman ( he wasn’t judging the contest).

How many of you – who raise a hell over the mistreatment of Blacks by Indians – actually live in an area dominated by them? How many of you are married to Black men/women or have Black relatives? Are you ready to marry your sister or daughter to a black? When was the last time you invited a Black to a family party or ceremony? And most importantly how many of you Privileged-Leftist-Couch-Rudaalis (professional criers) have donated to charities that work for upliftment of blacks like ‘Negro College Fund’?

Seriously, I would like to hear about such real-life experiences, for a change, from the I-see-racism-in-every-f*king-thing brigade. I am really tired of your hypothetical/theoretical drivel, and interested in seeing some real-life action from your end like marrying a black girl/man or marrying your sister to a black.

And those complaining about Holy-word ‘rape’ being used so un-PCly, puhleese give me a break. Have you even seen the photos and expressions of the girl? She really looks like she’s about to shit in her pants. Isn’t there a thing such as a ‘joke’? Have you, all, demigods of PCness have foresworn yourselves to neverending grumpiness and eternal nitpickin?

“to a black”

You know what, try saying that to the face of an African-American, or someone dating inter-racially. You’d get your ass handed back to you.

ASH,

You are assuming a black to be a violent person, who would jump on others at the slightest pretext. Isn’t that a racist stereotype in itself? Or are you acknowlodging the reality (that bites)?

When do you guys plan on promoting them to plain Americans from pseudo-names like African-Americans? Oh, I forgot, that’s the privilige of the whites, who are the only true-Americans.

What is wrong in ‘Black’? Didn’t leaders like MLK Jr. took pride in their black identity. The word itself was a replacement for the dreaded ‘N’ word (like Harijans instead of untouchables). Today both “harijan” and “black” are bad words due to the handiwork of leftists (who don’t have a better job) ! PCness stinks

Vivek and others — to prefer blondes is certainly not racism, any more than confused’s preference of dark skin. But to say it is an “objective factual statement” that they are more beautiful may not be racism either; but it is certainly unbelievable crassness and stupidity that deserves to be called out.

For people who think Saket (vulturo) shouldn’t contribute to DP check out

For the rest, carry on :)

Srijith, thanks for providing a tech solution. I have always talked about such a solution in case people don’t agree with a particular contributor. Heck, if I was posting regularly, a ‘pipe’ can be made without my posts too :)

Rahul – While it’s applicability to Saket’s view is debatable, from when did him being crass or stupid become soceital issues ? If not so, why is getting discussed here in the magnitude of a natural disaster?

It’s more like, someone pointed ‘I spot a racist there’ and others joined in – ‘let’s get together and lynch him’. Thankfully unlike the witches of the middle-ages, Vulturo is safe behind his internet connection from the online version of ‘lynching mob mentality’.

srijith – Excellent work, but apparently broken. It may filter out Vulturos posts [ which are invariably about other blogs], but it doesn’t filter *his own* which got posted or got linked by others. May be you should add additional filters too to remove such cross-linking.

While at it, why don’t you improvise by adding words like ‘madrasi’, ‘black’, ‘rape’ etc. to the filter? Hope, that way you can remain safe in your online cocoon, sheltered from the stark realities of the outside world

A NOT SO STUPID QUESTION.

Is DP the new ‘Big Brother’ [racism has it's gauranteed viewership] ? and is Vulturo, the equivalent of Jade goody? :-)
