My college: IT-BHU

Rahul, a student at IT-BHU (disclosure: I too studied there. 25 years ago!), writes about the institution “from the vantage of an average nineteen year old who has loved and hated his college at different times…”. His post is a little too heavy on the negatives for my taste.

Let me present an extract in which Rahul talks about the IT-BHU freshers’ angst (he calls it the ‘IIT hangover’):

It is something that every fresher at our college goes through. And God Forbid, if you happen to be in branches like Computer Science and Electronics (the 1500-2500 bracket), your misery is on an exponential ascent for the first few days. You rue the moment you decided to come here, foregoing the chance to be called an IITian and choosing instead a life of relative anonymity. The fact that hostels aren’t exactly awe-inspiring and age-old pre-independence style buildings stokes the incipient fire of doubt smoldering within. Though the net connectivity and the palatable mess food is redeeming, the overall effect is still a far cry from being favorable. Discussions centre themselves around the—did we make the right decision? — question and heated discussions ensue late into the night about how we would have been far better off had we been at an IIT. Some people decide to take JEE again, certain that a top 500 rank is well within their reach on account of them having cleared JEE once already. It’s a different story that pretty soon, rigorous first year study schedule forces them to change tack. You talk to your friends who–at the same rank or in some cases a lower rank–chose an IIT, and who launch themselves into excited, lingo-heavy rhapsodies about how their college was the next big thing after JLo’s bum.
