Atheist like me don’t take to the pulpit on Sundays and preach to a population what to do. We don’t preach our way as being the only way to some “fantastically nice place aka heaven”. But I have been constantly told by all religious groups how to lead my life – pray to this God, believe in only him, do this or don’t do that, you are going to burn in hell if you don’t believe in this, gay living is a sin, abortion is killing, stem cell research is against God’s wishes.. and so on…
Constantly voluble are the religious right – Not the atheist group. It is only now that Atheist are speaking up. And we ask only one thing – believe what you want to, don’t stand and preach to others that it is the “only” way. Because it is not.
Sakshi has a lovely rant against those religious folks who make such a big deal about virginity. From her post, you can follow the discussion, particularaly see this post.

Confused now you have made me even more confused when you refer to us as “those” people…you make it sound as if believing in God is some sort off a sin…and not believing is the “in” thing.
Anyways, speaking on the topic at hand – if a woman
stateswishes to remain a virgin until marriage or says that she is doing so cause of her faith…what’s the big deal. I mean it’s her freaking wish….If these people (the author of the post you refer to at the end) is not bitch-mouthing about those who left-right-center (pun unintended) nor is she judging those who give two hoots about matters of religion…then on what bases are these rants formed??

I ranted about the religious right. Because most people belong to a faith based group, they believe that they have it right. I have no problems with a women who remains virgin because of her faith. Don’t ask others to remain one too. Or discriminate that if you are don’t do as I say, you are going to hell.
My rant was about all religious fundies who belive they are right and hence the non-believers wrong.
If a person belives in God and goes about his life without pointing fallacies (in his mind) in other people’s life style, why the heck would I be angry?
And belive me, not fitting in with the rest of the mindset is not easy. That is why very few people come out and say they are Atheist.

‘Those’ wasn’t a reference to Meldoy but was a general statement. And I absolutely agree with you-to each it’s own, however when you use religion as a debating tool, the debate inevitably moves from personal choices to societal coercion. Personally, I find using terms like ’saving yourself’ distasteful.
Sakshi,
You rejected my offer….
