The Namesake

A review of The Namesake at To Each Its Own.

Mira Nair has very faithfully adapted to the novel but in places I feel it suffers from an episodic choppiness. It appears a little sketchy and makes the viewer long for more information or scenes to make it complete and in certain aspects more understandable. Of course it is difficult to cram a lot into the movie’s two-hour running time, and many a times it does seems rushed but on the whole it can relate to anybody and everybody.

Like the directors other movies The Namesake too carries a lot of color, the locations and settings are well chosen; specially the scenes at the magnificent Taj Mahal. Also the chaos surrounding Calcutta and the neighborhood of Queens is very well captured.
