Sampada reviews Narendra Jadhav’s Untouchables.
Jadhav’s book is a great reflection on the life of the people who come from the lower caste of the Hindu religious system. Can you tolerate being labeled “untouchable? Can you imagine how it feels to have restrictions on moving about in society, with a broom attached to your waist, so you’re constantly wiping out your own existence?

Media has to take some of the blame for perpetuating tags. The latest I read in a foreign news paper (by the way the journalist has an indian name) the head line ‘ untouchable wins the UP elections”. Ok, now is Maya really untouchable? Why should she be called that? She went to a regular school and her father was a central govt officer who has shaken a number of hands. Many people in europe ask me whether these people really cannot be touched and so can I shake their hand etc. Some years ago when K R Narayanan visited France, the famous news paper Le Monde reported about the Untouchable president and showed the photo of the french president shaking his hand as if no one did that in India. It was all so bizarre.
I think there are loads are people ” who are supposedly untouchables according to the media” who are leading perfectly normal lives. Can the media be more politically correct?
