Laaga Chunari Mein Daag review

Meetu reviews Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.

We are talking of a movie that claims to be about the ‘journey of a woman’. I refuse to believe that it was supposed to be in the leave-your-brain-home-and-don’t-ask-too-many-questions genre. What could have been a celebration of the spirit of a woman, turns into another story of a woman finding ultimate happiness only in meeting an ideal man. It is uncanny how a salute to womanhood ends in men being the goal of their lives.

Did you check the credits? more than likely the screenplay was written by a man! mystery solved!

We have the same disappointing “answer” to women’s problems in western pop media…Thirtysomething, Desperate Housewives, Sex & the City…usually ends up with a Good Man And Marriage (and a kid).

Sirensongs – During the titles itself, they’ve said that the story has been taken from (”inspired”) a Marathi movie/book called “Doghi”. More here.

Hey Sirensongs, the titles “Desperate Housewives”, “Sex and the city” clearly state that the objective of the woman is to be a “housewife” and have “sex”. So, in a way, you can say that they stick to their purpose. Am not saying that makes it right, but the makers have decided and stuck to their focus (from the few episodes I have seen). Haven’t seen “Thirty something”, so cannot comment.

However, it infuriates me when a movie about the journey of a woman ends with the father embracing the men in his daughter’s lives, instead of the daughters!

Thanks BA, for the pointer. But, I didn’t see any sister-bonding that the article talks about in “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag”. In fact, I found the relationship very superficial and their interaction extremely episodic. Again, haven’t seen the Marathi movie, so can’t comment on that.
