Investigative Journalism?
Given Tehelka’s expose on post-Godhra riots, do you think the Indian media is doing a good job in investigative journalism? What other controversies would you like to be throughly investigated?
PS. We’re trying to revive the Speak Up section.

How about an investigation into the godhra train-coach burning incident itself - was it really a
1. Planned attack by local muslims?
2. Spontaneous attack by local muslims?
3. Perpetrated by a very small group of miscreants?
4. An accident of the kind that happens when people ignore the “do not carry gas cylinders in train” warnings?
In the discussions I have had with people recently on this, I have been told that a forensics report mentioned that the fire started inside, but there is no officially accepted report by the Modi govt. I was also told that the local goons on whom Modi placed the blame, and then said that they had run away, were later found in a grave created during the riots.
Not that any of the above reasons would ever justify state-sponsored genocide, but it will sure help silence some of my more right-wing friends who keep asking the standard “why don’t we ask who burnt that train coach” question everytime I mention the shame that was[is?] Gujarat.
Thanks,

While the speak-up is a good idea, its terrible implementation leaves it in the cold. Unless a user looks for it, it is lost in the barrage of links and posts on the home page. Even though I know where it is, I still have to find it on the homepage.
If you want people to speak-up, then perhaps speakup block should be some sort of sticky post on the front page, so everybody knows you are trying to stir a debate and its the first thing they read, so they are more likely to contribute.

Here are some random ones :
a) the investigation into the 2000 crores of monies that Pravin Mahajan claimed that Pramod Mahajan had made & not shared. Why is everyone quiet about that.
b) investigation into the environmental consequences of the Sethu Samudram Project. Do we really want the next Tsunami to take down Sri Lanka & Tamil Nadu…
c) What is happening on the Parliament Bombing Case and why has everyone gone quiet on it.
d) What is the link between the setting up of retail food giants and the increase in the price of onions ? The onions are apparently getting exported and we, in India, are consuming imported, costlier onions.
e) Political Party Funding in India - wouldn’t you be interested in reading this in the run up to the elections? There is some committee report on more transparent funding - but wouldn’t you like to know who is contributing, and what is the cost of that contribution?
