The Burmese Harp
The Mountaintop on a “war movie” - The Burmese Harp, that doesn’t quite go the usual way.
War movies depict and animal trimphalism at its gory best. In a sense it is not unlike a sports movie. Sports cinema is again about the triumph of the animal spirit, the winning of the team or how they give all and overcome odds to drink from the sweet cup of victory. Of course a lot of them touch upon the underlying human emotions of the affected parties. But that is all that they stop with. And then battle movies are supposed to show battle footage .It is here that Ichikawa’s ‘The Burmese Harp’ is refreshingly different.
