Filmiholic is not impressed by Saawariya.
Perhaps if I were still a swoony teenage girl, I would have loved this film unequivocally… I might have been swept along by the soaring orchestration, the stunning visuals of Saawariya, the peacock-colored Venice-sur-Bharat, streets lined with Moulin Rouge cafes and Urdu script, where gondolas glide past lotus flowers in the water, and giant Buddha heads dot the cityscape…
Baradwaj disagrees, and is fascinated by this “dark anti-romance”.
Love, in real life, is rarely as all-out sweet and high-minded and uplifting as it is in the movies, and the last thing you expect is two blue-blood Bollywood newcomers to service this nihilistic notion of romance – but that’s what Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor (making confident, competent debuts as Raj and Sakina) do in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya.
Meetu at Without Giving The Movie Away is disappointed by Saawariya and considers the music its only saving grace.
Speaking of enchantment, we know that the only way Sanjay Leela Bhansali can make movies is when it has grand sets. It’s a fetish; it’s like choosing the best-looking font before starting work on a document.

Saawariya is a total waste of time. An extremely simple theme directed unsuccessfully by SLB to a 130-minute duration, letting the audience whimper at the atrocious laughter of Mukherjee, and dialogues that pierces into the heart of just the characters – but does not cause even a wink of the eye for the audience.
A total failure.

What a waste of time and Money. Horrible. But maybe some of you out there may like it. I wonder what happened to SLB.

rubbish is all i can say about saawariya. no story, poor performances, no necessity for a director at all. looks like sanjay bhansali slept all the while during making the movie. horrible music. what a fall slb,too bad. expected atleast the songs to be good were horrible. too many songs. useless sets. only thing good was the cinematography. ravichandran u shine like a diamond amidst a lot of charcoal.and a slb film without the voice of kavitha krishnamoorthy in the songs is like khana without salt.

Saawariya was a beautiful movie!

it was like poetry on celluloid. It is one of the most GREATEST Indian movies I have ever seen. The sets are visually appealing, the songs leave you soothed and the story is based on the classical novel “White Nights”. The theme of love has been presented very exquistely in this picture and the performences by Ranbir and Sonam are brilliant. It is like a broadway musical set set within Indian Sentiments. All I can say is “AWESOME”.
