Medical Conscription

Mandatory temporary rural postings for students is not the answer. The Indian army, according to some news reports that I read a while ago, faces shortages of personnel in many areas. So is the Defence Ministry going to introduce mandatory military service or is it planning to conscript people?

Scan Man gives us an overview of the medical conscription issue that affects hundreds of medical students in India.

Thanks for the link Patrix.
Let us hope better sense prevails and this remains at the proposal stage like many other of our government’s grand ‘development’ plans.

if the Indian tax payer is subsidizing the medical colleges, then the elected representatives have every right to send the doctors anywhere they want. E.g. the army in US is comprised of “volunteers” who are promised education for service and yes, in exchange for being sent wherever in the world, they get tuition fees. The fact is that the Indian tax payer pays a lot for doctors who mostly escape to US after they are done studying.

Amataya: I hope you read my entire post before you commented here. I agree with you on the subsidies and the debt owed by medical students to the ‘Indian tax payer.’ The same debt is owed by every student of a government run school and college from the village primary school to the IITs, IIMs & AIIMS. Apply the same yardstick for everyone. Do not pick on medical students alone.
