Remembering Sujatha

Nandhu Sundaram pens a simple obituary to the famous Tamil writer S. Rangarajan, known by his pen name of “Sujatha”, who died on Wednesday night in Chennai.

His ability to explain science in simple terms to lay readers was unparalleled. He brought freshness to Tamil writing on diverse subjects like archaeology, astrophysics, biotechnology and ancient Tamil literature.

Sujatha introduced readers to diverse opinion and perspectives on any topic he wrote and hence made the readers think and form their own opinion while helping them with a lot of information and subtly conveying his opinion as one of them. He treated readers above average and there is a demanding kind of joy when you read him.

He read widely and unstintingly shared his pleasure with others knowing that there are several who have no opportunity of doing so. Be it the Occam’s Razor or Arthur Koestler’s theory of art he relished sharing his experience and enjoyment with others in a lucid style. He acknowledged my father’s contribution to Tamil Cinema and I am grateful to him for that.

Sujatha stands atop all Tamil literates of the last millennium — by his unique diction and style. His perceptions were sharper than any other writer of our time. He shall remain in the hearts of the Tamil-reading public for ever.

He is a Genius and Master of all subjects. He became the role model for the Youths and the younger generation. He initiated the reading habit to all the people. No words to explain his excellence. I am proud to be a reader of SUJATHA’s Books.

Sujatha, a versatile personality who brought all the new things to tamil world. Be it is his BHEL days or the weekly magazine writings or managing the Pentamedia or serving Govt’s “Kural Peedam” or the screeplay writings for Maniratnam/Shankar/Kamal/Rajiv Menon, Sujatha given his best and made every thing rememberable. A great loss to tamil fraternity.

While writers of the olden age wrote for the Gods, Sujata wrote for the common man. He stood tall among all his peers. He made reading novels something u looked forward to, particularly his.
