Auschwitz looks like a resort. …The buildings – past the reception and well inside the camp – look sturdy. Cozy.
But pause, close your eyes for a few seconds, and look again. The evidence of yesterday’s horror hit you on your face. The fences are electrified, there are watch towers, and the arch ominously announces ‘Arbeit macht frei’ – work makes you free.
Only death made most of its inmates free.
