I’ve always got good things to say about Desipundit. And when you announced the new photgraphy feature I was looking forward to saying even MORE good things. As it turns out, your first photo of the week left me a little unimpressed. Did you have to pick the one who’s subject is the most stereotypical image of India known to man?
Don’t get me wrong, I think the Taj Mahal deserves the awe-struck reviews it gets, it’s one of my favourite places on earth. But choosing it as your Photo of the week seems like a cop-out for two reasons:
1) It reinforces the tired old image of India as a place of exoticism, dreadlocked sadhus, impoverished beggars and wealthy Maharajahs.
2) If you point your camera at a monument like the Taj Mahal it doesnt matter what level of skill you’re at as a photographer. Chances are, the snaps going to come out pretty stunning. Try an angle thats a litle bit different and you’ve got a gauranteed winner. So the level of skill and difficulty involved in that pic seems pretty unchallenging.
All said and done, I look forward to next weeks photograph and hope it fires the imagination a bit more than this weeks has.

Thanks for the inputs Shawn. Though this is the first official Photo Friday, we started this last week itself and would love to see your comments on it too. See http://www.desipundit.com/2008/03/17/india-thru-the-lens-photo-of-the-week/
I would love to hear more from you every Friday.
Your opinion on stereotype of Taj is a concern, I have to admit, that did occur to me when I was browsing through the pictures in the pool submitted last week.
If you aren’t already in the desipundit flickr pool, please do join, browse through it and contribute. Thanks.
