On The Scarlett Murder Case

Diptosh Majumdar argues the inability of the people of Goa, and by extension Indians in general, to accept ”deviant” lifestyles has led to the blame game in Goa,

We have no idea that while we may still consider words like freethinker or libertine derogatory in nature but a forgiving West has long moved on and accepted nonconformists like hippies, cultists, beatniks, New Agers, commune inhabitants and flower children as part of the mainstream. What we deride as promiscuity is not looked down upon in the same way either in North America or Europe. To them, unabashed fulfillment of biological needs does not necessarily imply that a woman can be dismissed as a whore. Our xenophobic tendencies prevent us from rightly interpreting changing sexual mores in nations abroad.

Again, it all comes down to cultural differences I believe.

It all comes down to differences in culture. These are not going to be resolved any soon.

“Cultures” are not engraved in stone and are constantly evolving and changing.

Mainstream Indians are always going on about how their ‘culture’ should be respected. This is a two-way street. One of the things that makes Goa unique and, as so many Indians say, ” a nice place to go” is the confluence of foreign cultures and lifestyles. Let’s face it, what do people really mean when they say it’s “nice”? For one thing, people don’t take a dump on the beach there like they do in 95% of the rest of India. Definitely, that is “foreign” influence (as in Puducherry).

As always, Indians seem to want it both ways, enjoying the advantages that foreigners bring with their culture (individual freedom for one) then using those same things against the foreigners when it suits them. Thanks to this author for highlighting the hypocrisy in the Goa situation.

hey….why so much noise on one british girl getting raped and killed that to largely due to her own moral failings. why dont gruesome acts of violence on women (read innocent women) that takes place in hinterlands get same media coverage…i mean that girl and her mother were no angels…okay they do recieve a fair trial but stop portraying them as hapless women fallen into wrong circumstances…in most probability scarlett wasnt rapes it was sex with mutual consent and she probably dies because of drug overdose
