Responding to those who have urged him not to carry the Olympic torch, Aamir Khan states on his blog that he agreed because no country, including India, is free of violence.
Similarly, I have the highest respect and regard for the struggle that the people of Iraq, Kashmiri Pundits who have been displaced, Kashmiris in general, and the people of Palestine, are going through. I have named above just a few instances of human rights violations. Across the world, and indeed within our own country too, there are several instances and examples of atrocities and human rights violation, which are still continuing
In his well argued open letter to Aamir, B. Raman criticizes him for equating India with China,
You and others, who have written on this subject, are correct in their references to Kashmir, our North-East, the grievances and anger of our Khalistanis and Muslims etc. We too have been having problems with our religious and ethnic minorities just as the Chinese are having problems with their minorities in Tibet, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. No country in the world has been free of such problems.
The question to be asked is not whether we have the same problems as the Chinese, but what has been our approach to these probelms. Do we deal with these problems in the same way as the Chinese do or do we follow a different approach?
The Acorn criticizes Aamir for offering the worst possible reason to carry the torch,
There can only be contempt for those who draw this specious analogy and hide behind the I-am-against-any-form-of-violence amoral pacifism.
That Aamir Khan made this comparison should disqualify him from carrying the torch on behalf of India. The torch should be carried by those who are proud of the values that India stands for.
Shame on you, Mr Khan.

For those who are wondering…
The most probable reason why he mentions Kashmiri Pandits is:
He only recently attended a media gathering at India Today Enclave, a gathering that also had Shekhar Kapur, Priety Zinta, Finance Minister Chidambaram and Yasin Malik in attendence.

The Acorn article has an update that say’s Amir is representing Coca Cola and not India.
I think this article makes sense:

As for the Olympics, India has already protested in strongest sense, Hockey team won’t be there in China to represent our proud National sport and other teams have also been advised to avoid touching any dirty Chinese Gold.
