Hanging the clothes out to dry…

I grew up in a village in America. As a small child, the only clothes dryer I knew was the the sun. During my college years, a world away in India, I was reintroduced to drying clothes by the graces of the weather gods. Time spent in Madras Christian College has left me with many fond memories of not only hand washing and beating clothes on the hot cement, but many prayers to God that the climate would stay at the perfect ‘clothes drying’ setting so that I could actually wear what I washed today tomorrow. Nita also shares her thoughts on the culture of drying clothes and how it is changing in the west because of global warming…

The clothesline has been looked upon with disdain in the west (in North America and parts of Europe) for many years…until now. Whether its residential apartments or independent houses, municipalities have enforced rules which prohibit residents from displaying their laundry.

Sun-dried clothes are the absolute best – they feel the cleanest, smell the best and besides, the sunlight has disinfectant properties. I absolutely love my Indian clothesline. Back home in US, we still use the line both to conserve energy and to give the clothes that freshness.
