Stock Photography in India

Vijay has a great idea for an Indian startup – a website offering stock photography in the Indian context.  He believes there lies a very successful business opportunity in this market.  Whoever takes him up on this idea, don’t forget to send me the finder’s fee!

That said, we do have a small problem. I have friends who work with online portals and in running content who basically have this complaint: “We scrap content at times, simply because we don’t have a good supporting image to go with it”. Images are plenty and dime a dozen across the web. What they are talking about is an image that fits the context – the context here being, the audience, and the characters of the story being Indian.

I think Shripriya sits on the board of a similar company that does stock photography business although it is not restricted to India-based photos.

Patrix, thanks for pointing that out. I left a comment on Vijay’s blog as well. No reason that PhotoShelter can’t be used for what he wants – it is a global platform. If Indian photogs uploaded images, this could be a great solution. It is an extremely photog friendly model…

There exist a lot of stock image companies in the Indian context. So it’s not really a “new business idea”. There actually happens to be quite a lot of competition in this arena. Some are run by photographers themselves, some by curators and some by others.
