Young Emotion
Don’t we assume that stong emotions are the property of adults only? A twelve-year-old blogger gives us a reason to re-think with her story about a young girl’s first experience with confronting uncomfortable truths.
Riya returned home happily that evening after giving her last paper. She had always topped through her college years, and this being the last one, she was determined to work hard and pass out with flying colors!
But then life changed in an instant when she unintentionally eavesdropped on her parents and learnt the truth.

Sorry, I found the story highly pretentious and filmy, the fact that the writer is a 12 year old not withstanding. Not worthy of a DP selection!

@ Rada: Really? The story wasn’t completely original, I agree. But what really impressed me is that Meghna had explored emotion rather than situation in a fictitious setting. And I thought she managed to hold the reader quite well through it. I agree that it could be improved tremendously, but think of yourself at the age of 12. How many of us were able to comprehend and even imagine situations like the ones she detailed? Telling a story is an art, one that demands constant improvisation and Meghna has some way to go but I think she’s on the right path.

A 12 year old should explore emotions and situations she is familiar with, rather than trying to write about stuff which is way over her realm of experience, I feel!
The story also reinforces certain ingrained prejuidices about adoption, which also I found offensive. I am the adoptive parent of a lovely 14-year old girl and let me assure you, chidren do not run away from home once they find out that they are adopted; they do so if they are not loved or cherished.
Meghna has hope as a writer only if she can break away from the stifling embrace of bollywood and start thinking originally!

@ Rada: That’s useful feedback and I hope Meghna takes it well and uses it to improve her writing even more.
