The festival existed from a long time and was associated with purchase of ANY metal. So people would just buy steel utensils.
The focus on gold is a new invention. Last year when I was in Blr the promotion was about white gold and even gemstones. So this is clearly a scam to part the fools from their money.

Say 5 years back, nobody spoke about Akshaya Tritiya.
GOD is the usual bait to lure customers to shops. And more if you say that buying something is auspicious,bring in luck etc..
Hats off the guy who first connected Gold purchase and Akshaya Tritiya. Smart chap!

No offence to any one’s sentiments, but this is nothing less than a pure marketing strategy! May it be Akshya Trithya or Dhanteras(hope i spelled it right) news papers are flooded with ads telling how auspicious the occasion is to buy gold.
