Reviewing “The Indians”

Can one really capture all about India and Indians between the pages of a single book?  Sudhir and Katharina Kakar have attempted just that, with their book “The Indians – Portrait of a People”.  Bullshee reads the book and finds that he can relate to quite a few portions, like the ones on our deep-rooted ideas about women, complexion and religion.

Moving on, I read a chapter that gave me plenty of laughs. Not out of mirth, but out of pure agreement and recognition of the scenes described within- on the Indian woman and her struggle and journey through life in India. It’s no secret that the patriarchal society is king of the land (pun intended) here, but what really got me interested were the parts about the urban middle-class Indian woman and how she reacted in synch with some of the most timeless of Indian traditions.

“The average college girl in Delhi, for instance, dressed in jeans or even short skirts, will perhaps smile at the antics of a boy playing the clown to attract her attention but will hesitate to break out into loud laughter.
