Karnataka Poll Analysis

The Karnataka poll results are out and BJP is 3 seats short of the magic number to form the Government. Sandeep has an analysis.

Across party lines, the Defeated attributed BJP’s success to exactly one factor: preparedness and work. A Congress leader observed that the BJP began preparing for polls from the day Yeddyurappa lost power. BJP leaders credit this success to Arun Jaitley’s orchestrations and some really dedicated groundwork by party workers. For the dirt on what went in BJP’s favour etc, “expert” analyses provide the necessary (but boring) meal. The Congress has only itself to blame as I had observed earlier. It lived purely on hope and amazing callousness.

Karan writes that BJP must formulate a strategy for winning the general elections in 2009.

The BJP’s victories have often been attributed to either the use of Hindutuva or on the basis of cashing in on an anti-incumbency vote. By winning Karnataka, the people of the state have reposed faith in a leadership that was wronged and needed a clear mandate to deliver on issues of development and overall welfare of the state. The charge of igniting religious fervor or anti-incumbency cannot gain currency in these elections given how the campaign panned out and considering the fact that the BJP was a partner in the previous government with the JD(S). The BJP has now gained a foot in the door in the politics of South India and it has an opportunity to now deliver on what the Leader of the Opposition, L.K. Advani calls the GDP mantra – Growth, Development and Protection (security) for all.
