It’s the time of the Bees. Tarun writes about 11 year old Akshay Rajagopal winning the 2008 National Geographic Bee a few days ago.
The winner is only the second one in this competition’s history with a perfect performance. His win has made him richer by $25,000 and a trip to the next Bee competition.
Then last night, Sameer Mishra won the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee, in a contest that was dominated by desi kids. Sepia Mutiny has a report on the final few rounds. In the comments section, you will also find a list of previous Indian American winners.
What is it about desis and spelling bees? We’ve posed the question before but appear to have answered it only partially, at best. Then again, the fact that desi kids also kick-ass in the geography bee might mean there is some truth to the idea that desis like gulping trivia like little brown pac-men.

Thanks for the link back. In terms of achievement, Indians are increasingly becoming the new Jews in America.
