RTI and the Supreme Court

The Chief Justice of India, K.G Balakrishnan, stated that the court is exempt from the Right to Information Act of 2005 (RTI). Rohit says a bit of sunshine won’t hurt.

The RTI Act continues to face hurdles from influential sections within the government. The Court’s reluctance emboldens such elements; only recently, the parliament refused to open its committee meetings to public participation. The Court’s acceptance of the RTI Act would not only inspire public confidence in its own conduct but also check those who continue to resist accountability and transparency in public life.
