Perils of Free Online Storage

A few days back, I try logging into Mediamax to upload more files. Mediamax had now changed to Linkup. I was surprised as I had received no information. I thought perhaps that was fine. But imagine my rude shock, when I read on home page that ONLY accounts for paid users had been moved to the new Web site! For free usage upto 2 GB (compare it with earlier free offering of 25 GB), we needed to signup again for a new account with Linkup. What about all my FILES in Mediamax? LOST!!

Free online backup services abound but beware before you decide to dump your precious data on their servers. Poonam Sharma got a rude shock when her personal data was held hostage by Streamload/Mediamax/Linkup in exchange for upgrading to their paid services [hat tip: Vinayak].

I’ve been talking about how terrible MediaMax is for over a year - they have lost SO much of my data and that of other users. I’ve even started a blog documenting my troubles - check it out here.

Despite the terrible service of Mediamax - some people are STILL recommending it as an excellent tool!

I wrote to TechCrunch, WebWorkerDaily, Amit Agarwal (of Digital Inspiration) and other biggie blogs who had (or had not) recommended it at any point of time. Most of them publish with a link to my post. I want to thank all of them. Vinaya got it published in DesiPundit. [...]
