I fully understand the risks involved here, but I haven’t seen a better and more comprehensive review of Dasavatharam than this one by Prem Panicker. And so I had to link to it.
[d]espite a commendable effort on the Rediff message board, that Kalki cut-pasted earlier on this blog, you can save yourself considerable heartburn if you stop thinking of Dasavatharam as the Vishnu Purana in modern-day livery [...]. To try and draw parallels is a fool’s errand [...]
Think instead of the story as a caper, and of the ten characters, each in its turn, as the deus ex machina of the particular moment driving the story forward to a pre-ordained conclusion, and you save yourself a headache.
And before I get lynched for this a few pointers to keep in mind:
1. I am a Kamal fan.
2. You have to click on the link [here it is for you again] to go to the post that’s linked and comment if you want to get your point across; the excerpt posted above was not written by me.

Actually yes. You need to refresh it. It’s been acting up a bit, lately.
