The Loan Waiver Harvest

The beneficiaries in my area (that is, in and around Attingal in Thiruvananthapuram district) include a pharmacist in a private hospital who had attempted some spectacularly failed businesses, a local money lender, a gulf returnee who has been trying to become a local strongman ever since, an incorrigible alcoholic who is said to be in the brink of suicide and, not the one to be left behind in such matters, a local leftist politician. One thing is common among all these people: None of them are farmers. Not a single one is likely to distinguish between the seeds of beans and brinjal.

That is the list of beneficiaries of the farmer’s loan waiver scheme. Niji explains how various checks and balances are subverted in the name of providing relief to farmers.
